Setup

Gather only common or recycled items needed to map out safe evacuation routes for the toy townspeople on a grid map. Place the materials beside a simple recording sheet or blank paper, and prepare the Volcano Evacuation Planners challenge in one working area; no digital device is needed.

Activity

  1. Study the model volcano and predict which paths would be unsafe if lava started flowing.
  2. Map out safe evacuation routes for the toy townspeople on a grid map.
  3. Run an evacuation drill and discover a planned route crosses the danger zone, then reroute it to safety.
  4. Present the final evacuation plan to the town residents, explaining why each route is safe.
