Setup

Gather only common or recycled items needed to cut and attach fabric capes to action figures or clothespin heroes, trying a few different shapes and lengths. Place the materials beside a simple recording sheet or blank paper, and prepare the Superhero Cape Test Lab challenge in one working area; no digital device is needed.

Activity

  1. Look at different cape shapes and predict which one will catch the most air when a hero runs or flies.
  2. Cut and attach fabric capes to action figures or clothespin heroes, trying a few different shapes and lengths.
  3. Test each cape in front of a fan and discover that some flip inside out or twist, then adjust the shape or attachment point to fix it.
  4. Hold a final cape race and crown the most aerodynamic design, explaining what made it work best.

Done when: The learner completes Superhero Cape Test Lab after carrying out this core test: Test each cape in front of a fan and discover that some flip inside out or twist, then adjust the shape or attachment point to fix it. The learner then uses that result to complete the final task: Hold a final cape race and crown the most aerodynamic design, explaining what made it work best.
