Setup

Gather only common or recycled items needed to build a small city of structures using a mix of cubes, triangular prisms, and cylinders. Place the materials beside a simple recording sheet or blank paper, and prepare the Shape City Construction challenge in one working area; no digital device is needed.

Activity

  1. Sort building blocks by shape and talk about which shapes seem sturdiest for a tall building.
  2. Build a small city of structures using a mix of cubes, triangular prisms, and cylinders.
  3. Test each building with a gentle nudge or a toy car driving past, discovering a tower using only cylinders topples over, then rebuild it with a flat cube base.
  4. Take visitors on a tour of Shape City, naming the shapes used in each stable structure.

Done when: The learner completes Shape City Construction after carrying out this core test: Test each building with a gentle nudge or a toy car driving past, discovering a tower using only cylinders topples over, then rebuild it with a flat cube base. The learner then uses that result to complete the final task: Take visitors on a tour of Shape City, naming the shapes used in each stable structure.
