Setup

Gather only common or recycled items needed to build simple sorting bins labeled paper, plastic, and cardboard for the pretend robot to use. Place the materials beside a simple recording sheet or blank paper, and prepare the Recycling Robot Trainers challenge in one working area; no digital device is needed.

Activity

  1. Look at a pile of clean, empty recyclables and discuss what rule a sorting robot would need to follow for each material.
  2. Build simple sorting bins labeled paper, plastic, and cardboard for the pretend robot to use.
  3. Feed items to the robot puppet one at a time, discovering one item, like a paper cup with a plastic lining, is tricky to classify, then decide together which bin fits best.
  4. Run a final sorting demonstration for the recycling robot, explaining the rules it learned.

Done when: The learner completes Recycling Robot Trainers after carrying out this core test: Feed items to the robot puppet one at a time, discovering one item, like a paper cup with a plastic lining, is tricky to classify, then decide together which bin fits best. The learner then uses that result to complete the final task: Run a final sorting demonstration for the recycling robot, explaining the rules it learned.
