Setup

Gather only common or recycled items needed to build a small road system in a sand or dirt tray with raised edges and small drainage channels. Place the materials beside a simple recording sheet or blank paper, and prepare the Rain-Puddle Road Crew challenge in one working area; no digital device is needed.

Activity

  1. Predict what happens to a dirt road when rain falls on it and where puddles might form.
  2. Build a small road system in a sand or dirt tray with raised edges and small drainage channels.
  3. Pour cups of water onto the road, discovering one section floods over the edge, then dig a deeper channel or add a small bridge to redirect the water.
  4. Drive a toy truck across the finished road during a rainstorm to show it stays clear and passable.

Done when: The learner completes Rain-Puddle Road Crew after carrying out this core test: Pour cups of water onto the road, discovering one section floods over the edge, then dig a deeper channel or add a small bridge to redirect the water. The learner then uses that result to complete the final task: Drive a toy truck across the finished road during a rainstorm to show it stays clear and passable.
