Setup

Gather only common or recycled items needed to build a small test zone for each material in shallow trays or boxes. Place the materials beside a simple recording sheet or blank paper, and prepare the Playground Safety Inspectors challenge in one working area; no digital device is needed.

Activity

  1. Predict which surface, sand, mulch, or foam, will cushion a fall the best.
  2. Build a small test zone for each material in shallow trays or boxes.
  3. Drop a toy figure onto each surface and measure how it lands, discovering one surface still feels too hard, then layer materials together.
  4. Present an inspection report with safety ratings for each surface to the playground committee.

Done when: The learner completes Playground Safety Inspectors after carrying out this core test: Drop a toy figure onto each surface and measure how it lands, discovering one surface still feels too hard, then layer materials together. The learner then uses that result to complete the final task: Present an inspection report with safety ratings for each surface to the playground committee.
