Setup

Gather clean socks, sorting mats, pattern cards and clear a small work surface. Read the Lost-Sock Pattern Bureau mission aloud, then place the supplies where children can choose and compare them safely.

Activity

  1. Examine a pile of lost socks and look for socks that share a color, stripe, or texture pattern.
  2. Sort the socks into matched pairs or pattern families on a sorting mat.
  3. Build an extended pattern using the socks in a row, discovering the pattern breaks at one spot, then swap in the correct sock to fix it.
  4. Present the Pattern Bureau report, reading the finished pattern aloud and explaining the matching rule used.
