Setup

Gather ice cubes, foil, foam scraps and clear a small work surface. Read the Ice Palace Architects mission aloud, then place the supplies where children can choose and compare them safely.

Activity

  1. Predict which materials will slow down an ice block's melting the most.
  2. Build a protective palace structure around an ice cube using foam, foil, and cardboard.
  3. Check on the ice over time and discover it's melting faster than expected, then reinforce the insulation.
  4. Present the palace and its melting-time results, explaining which materials worked best.
