Setup

Gather egg cartons, leaves, twigs and clear a small work surface. Read the Egg Carton Bug Hotel mission aloud, then place the supplies where children can choose and compare them safely.

Activity

  1. Look at pictures of real insects like ladybugs, worms, and beetles and discuss what each one might need in a shelter.
  2. Build separate rooms in an egg carton using leaves, twigs, and cotton suited to each bug's needs.
  3. Move the plastic bugs into their rooms, discovering the beetle's twig room is too open, then add extra leaves to make it more enclosed.
  4. Open the bug hotel for a grand tour, describing why each room design fits its guest.
