Setup

Gather paper cups, push pins, flashlights and clear a small work surface. Read the Constellation Star Stories mission aloud, then place the supplies where children can choose and compare them safely.

Activity

  1. Look at a picture of a real constellation like the Big Dipper or Orion and predict what it might look like poked into paper and lit from behind.
  2. Draw the constellation's dot pattern on the bottom of a paper cup and carefully poke a hole at each star point.
  3. Turn off the lights, place a flashlight inside the cup, and shine the star pattern on the ceiling or wall to observe how the pattern holds together.
  4. Write or tell an original short story explaining how that star pattern got into the sky, in the style of a myth.
