Setup

Gather caterpillar cutouts, counting cubes, paper clips and clear a small work surface. Read the Caterpillar Measurement Station mission aloud, then place the supplies where children can choose and compare them safely.

Activity

  1. Look at a few caterpillar cutouts of different lengths and guess which one is longest without measuring.
  2. Measure each caterpillar using a row of counting cubes or paper clips lined up end to end.
  3. Compare the measurements, discovering two caterpillars seemed equal until counted precisely, revealing a one-cube difference.
  4. Line up the caterpillars from shortest to longest and announce the results like a measurement scientist.
