Young engineers channel their inner beaver, stacking sticks and mud to hold back a stream of water and see what it really takes to build a dam. Messy, hands-on, and full of leaky surprises that lead to real problem-solving.

Setup

Gather plastic bin, sand or clay, sticks and clear a small work surface. Read the Busy Beaver Building Crew mission aloud, then place the supplies where children can choose and compare them safely.

Activity

  1. Look at photos of real beaver dams and talk about why beavers pile up sticks and mud across moving water.
  2. Build a small dam across a plastic bin using sticks and clay, with adult help pressing materials firmly into place.
  3. Pour cups of water in slowly and watch what happens when the water rises too fast, then patch leaks or add height to hold it back.
  4. Demonstrate the finished dam by showing how the water pools on one side, and explain which repairs worked best.
