Setup

Gather clothespins, spoons, straws and clear a small work surface. Read the Bird-Beak Breakfast mission aloud, then place the supplies where children can choose and compare them safely.

Activity

  1. Look at pictures of different bird beaks and predict which tool, a clothespin, spoon, or straw, might work like each one.
  2. Set up a breakfast buffet of seeds, beans, and water in small cups to test each tool.
  3. Try picking up food with each tool, discovering the straw can't grab a seed at all, then trade it for a tool shaped more like a real beak.
  4. Report which tool worked best for which food and match it to the bird whose beak it resembles.
