Kids engineer spooky special effects, like a light that flickers on cue, a hidden lever that makes a door creak open, or a sound that plays on a trigger, for a mini haunted house display. It's Halloween energy channeled into real circuits and mechanisms.

Setup

Place common or recycled supplies for Haunted House Effects Shop on one work surface and choose a safe area for the test. Read the four activity directions aloud; drawings, paper models, and household substitutes may replace specialized materials, and no digital tool is required.

Activity

  1. Choose a spooky effect, such as a flickering light, creaking door, or sudden sound, and predict what trigger mechanism would set it off.
  2. Build the effect using a simple circuit, lever, or pulley system hidden inside the haunted house set.
  3. Test the trigger with a visitor walking through, then redesign the mechanism when it fires too early, too late, or not at all.
  4. Give a live haunted house tour to the class, revealing the engineering behind each effect afterward.

Done when: The group produces the Haunted House Effects Shop solution, completes the described test, makes the revision called for by the evidence, and supports its final explanation with an observed or measured result.
