Setup

Gather sand trays, toy fossils, brushes and clear a small work surface. Read the Fossil Dig Survey Team mission aloud, then place the supplies where children can choose and compare them safely.

  1. Look for clues on the surface and predict where fossils might be buried in the dig site.
  2. Dig carefully with brushes and mark each find's exact spot on a coordinate grid.
  3. Record all the positions and discover two finds landed in the same square, then refine the grid to separate them.
  4. Present the completed dig site map to fellow paleontologists, describing each fossil's location.
