Setup

Gather shoeboxes, foil, cotton and clear a small work surface. Read the Moon Base Bedtime mission aloud, then place the supplies where children can choose and compare them safely.

Activity

  1. Discuss why an astronaut sleeping on the moon would need a special enclosed space instead of a regular bed.
  2. Build a small moon-base sleeping pod inside a shoebox using foil for structure and cotton for cushioning.
  3. Test the pod by shining a flashlight sun directly on it, discovering it gets too bright and warm inside, then add a foil flap to block the light.
  4. Tuck the astronaut figure into the finished pod and explain each design choice that makes it safe for sleeping on the moon.

Done when: Children complete the core mission and tuck the astronaut figure into the finished pod and explain each design choice that makes it safe for sleeping on the moon.
