Setup

Gather cardboard, string, straws and clear a small work surface. Read the Castle Drawbridge Crew mission aloud, then place the supplies where children can choose and compare them safely.

Activity

  1. Look at pictures of castle drawbridges and predict how string and a tube might work together to lift a bridge up and down.
  2. Build a drawbridge using a cardboard flap, string threaded through a straw or tube pulley, and tape to anchor it.
  3. Pull the string to test the lift, discovering the bridge gets stuck halfway, then reposition the tube for a smoother pull.
  4. Demonstrate the finished drawbridge opening and closing to let a small figure safely cross the moat.
