Setup

Gather shallow trays, sand, craft sticks and clear a small work surface. Read the Farm Irrigation Helpers mission aloud, then place the supplies where children can choose and compare them safely.

Activity

  1. Look at a model farm and predict how water poured at one end could reach the crops without flooding the barn.
  2. Build small channels using craft sticks or straws pressed into the sand to guide water toward the crop rows.
  3. Pour water in slowly, discovering it leaks toward the barn through a gap, then pack the sand tighter or raise a small wall to block it.
  4. Water the entire crop row successfully while keeping the barn dry, and explain how the channels directed the flow.

Done when: Children complete the core mission and the entire crop row successfully while keeping the barn dry, and explain how the channels directed the flow.
