Setup

Gather only common or recycled items needed to build a few foil boats with different shapes and set them gently in a basin of water. Place the materials beside a simple recording sheet or blank paper, and prepare the Toy Boat Harbor challenge in one working area; no digital device is needed.

Activity

  1. Predict whether a flat foil boat or a folded-up foil boat will float better and hold more cargo.
  2. Build a few foil boats with different shapes and set them gently in a basin of water.
  3. Load each boat with pennies one at a time, discovering the flattest boat tips over first, then reshape it with higher sides before retesting.
  4. Race the strongest boats to the harbor dock carrying their full cargo and announce the winner.

Done when: The learner completes Toy Boat Harbor after carrying out this core test: Load each boat with pennies one at a time, discovering the flattest boat tips over first, then reshape it with higher sides before retesting. The learner then uses that result to complete the final task: Race the strongest boats to the harbor dock carrying their full cargo and announce the winner.
