Setup

Gather ice cubes, foil, cloth and clear a small work surface. Read the Ice-Cream Truck Meltdown mission aloud, then place the supplies where children can choose and compare them safely.

Activity

  1. Predict which wrapping, foil, cloth, or plastic, will keep an ice-cube scoop frozen the longest on a warm day.
  2. Wrap identical ice cubes in each test material and set them side by side in cups.
  3. Check the cubes every five minutes and notice the foil-wrapped one is melting fastest, then discuss why a shinier wrap might not always insulate best.
  4. Reveal which wrapped scoop survived longest and crown it the ice-cream truck's new insulation champion.
