Setup

Gather cardboard box, sponges, pipe cleaners and clear a small work surface. Read the Cardboard Car Wash mission aloud, then place the supplies where children can choose and compare them safely.

Activity

  1. Look at pictures of a real car wash and discuss what brushes, rollers, and water need to do to clean a car.
  2. Build a tunnel from a cardboard box with pipe-cleaner brushes and sponge rollers taped along the sides for cars to pass through.
  3. Push a toy car through the wash and find it gets stuck on a floppy brush, then re-tape the brush at a better angle so the car glides through.
  4. Run a grand opening of the car wash for a few dirty toy cars and show family how each part gets them clean.
