Busy Beaver Building Crew
Log in to saveYoung engineers channel their inner beaver, stacking sticks and mud to hold back a stream of water and see what it really takes to build a dam. Messy, hands-on, and full of leaky surprises that lead to real problem-solving.

Setup
Gather plastic bin, sand or clay, sticks and clear a small work surface. Read the Busy Beaver Building Crew mission aloud, then place the supplies where children can choose and compare them safely.
Activity
- Look at photos of real beaver dams and talk about why beavers pile up sticks and mud across moving water.
- Build a small dam across a plastic bin using sticks and clay, with adult help pressing materials firmly into place.
- Pour cups of water in slowly and watch what happens when the water rises too fast, then patch leaks or add height to hold it back.
- Demonstrate the finished dam by showing how the water pools on one side, and explain which repairs worked best.
Done when: Children complete the core mission and the finished dam by showing how the water pools on one side, and explain which repairs worked best.
