Synthetic-Biology Ethics Council

Log in to save
Grades 6-860-90 minSource: Creative Dad Company

Students study an idea from synthetic biology, like a modified crop or bacteria, using only paper and diagrams. Then they hold a council to debate its risks and benefits without ever touching a real lab bench. It makes big ideas about science and ethics easy to picture.

Quick Start

Digital downloads only.

$0 to buy. Printing noted separately.

Student time: one class period, one day.

Teacher prep / build-ahead: separate from student time.

Scale it

The default plan is one class period on a single day.

Scale back: Fit it into a shorter period, use fewer effects, or run a demo instead of a build.

Scale up: Add one extra effect, or spread the share-out across another day.

Steps

  1. Read a short brief about a proposed synthetic biology idea (for example, a drought-tolerant crop) and predict its biggest benefit and biggest risk.
  2. Gather information from at least three reliable sources (science museum sites, government agencies, science news for kids) about how this trait was or could be produced: selective breeding, genetic modification, or gene editing.
  3. Use a source-synthesis chart to compare how each technology changes inherited traits, how fast it works, and what evidence exists about benefits and risks. Rate the reliability of each source.
  4. Draw a diagram showing how the trait gets from the technology into offspring, labeling each planned change.
  5. Add a realistic problem, like an unplanned side effect or a containment failure, and use the sources to judge how likely it is.
  6. Hold a council debate and vote, with each side citing at least two sources from the synthesis chart.
  7. Write a one-paragraph summary of how the technology changes the way humans influence inheritance of traits.
