Steps

  1. Pick a simple dominant or recessive trait, like a fictional ear shape, and build a Punnett square family tree across three generations.
  2. Model asexual reproduction: the family grows a magic plant from cuttings for three generations. Draw its gene pair copied identically each time and compare it with the Punnett squares.
  3. Turn the genotype and phenotype results for both the family and the plant into plot points for the story.
  4. Draw an eight-panel comic: six family panels showing the trait appearing or skipping a generation, and two plant panels showing identical offspring.
  5. Test the comic: a classmate predicts each generation's trait for both the family and the plant. Compare their answers with your models, then redraw any unclear or wrong panel and retest.
  6. Add captions explaining that sexual reproduction mixes gene copies from two parents (variation) while asexual reproduction copies one parent's genes (identical offspring).
