Students run a mock weather broadcast desk. They turn real live or recent weather data into clear advice for the public during a pretend severe-weather event. It is weather science and communication under real time pressure.

Steps

  1. Review a recent severe-weather data set and predict what the public most needs to know.
  2. Mini-lesson: warm moist and cold dry air masses, and what happens at fronts.
  3. Collect data: each session, record temperature, humidity, pressure, wind direction, and sky conditions at the club and from three nearby weather stations, plus an hourly dataset from a past cold-front passage.
  4. Graph temperature, humidity, and pressure over time and mark when the front passed. Write an evidence statement explaining how the air masses caused the change.
  5. Build a broadcast script and a map showing the air masses and front, with plain-language advice.
  6. Get a live data update during the broadcast and adjust the explanation and advice without causing panic.

Standards mapped

  • NGSS · MS-ESS2-5

Collect data to provide evidence for how the motions and complex interactions of air masses results in changes in weather conditions.
