Students test real, publicly known ways of checking media against a set of changed and unchanged sample images or clips. Then they report honestly where those ways work and where they still fall short. It is critical digital literacy with real detective energy.

Quick Start

Digital downloads only.

$0 to buy. Printing noted separately.

Student time: one class period, one day.

Teacher prep / build-ahead: separate from student time.

Scale it

The default plan is one class period on a single day.

Scale back: Fit it into a shorter period, use fewer effects, or run a demo instead of a build.

Scale up: Add one extra effect, or spread the share-out across another day.

Steps

  1. Look at a mixed set of real and changed sample images and predict which clue (lighting, shadows, file information) will help most.
  2. Pixel lab: zoom into a digital image until pixels show, then encode an 8 by 8 black and white picture as a grid of 0s and 1s.
  3. Relay test: send the same picture across four relay students two ways while background noise plays: as an analog sketch copied by eye, and as the 0 and 1 grid read aloud. Count wrong pixels after each relay and graph both.
  4. Read info cards on analog and digital signals, exact digital copies, and file checks such as metadata and checksums. Record three facts.
  5. Add pixel-level methods to the checking checklist (metadata, repeated pixel blocks, comparing to the original file), test it on every image, and compare scores to the answer key.
  6. Find an image the checklist gets wrong, revise the checklist, and retest on unused images.
  7. Write a claim with evidence that digitized signals are a more reliable way to encode and transmit images than analog signals, combining the relay data and info-card facts.
