Quick Start

Digital downloads only.

$0 to buy. Printing noted separately.

Student time: one class period, one day.

Teacher prep / build-ahead: separate from student time.

Scale it

The default plan is one class period on a single day.

Scale back: Fit it into a shorter period, use fewer effects, or run a demo instead of a build.

Scale up: Add one extra effect, or spread the share-out across another day.

Setup

Print or hand-copy the essential prompt for Da Vinci Bridge Engineering Challenge, then set out only paper, pencils, and the common or recycled items needed for one test. Use a tabletop representation whenever the original version mentions a room, specialized device, or digital tool; the learning comes from the decisions and evidence, not elaborate scenery.

Activity

  1. Study a diagram of da Vinci's self-supporting bridge and note how the beams interlock.
  2. Build the interlocking structure across a gap using only friction, no glue or string.
  3. Gradually add weight to the center and record the maximum load before collapse.
  4. Write a short reflection connecting the design to da Vinci's Renaissance engineering notebooks.

Done when: The group has completed Da Vinci Bridge Engineering Challenge when it can write a short reflection connecting the design to da Vinci's Renaissance engineering notebooks and point to the observation, measurement, comparison, or trial that supports its conclusion.

Materials

Steps

  1. Study the da Vinci self-supporting bridge diagram and explain how compression and friction hold the beams together without fasteners.
  2. Write a design brief: span a 40 cm gap, hold at least 1 kg at the center, use 20 dowels or fewer, no glue or string, build in under 15 minutes. Cite the compression and friction principles and impacts such as material waste and user safety.
  3. Build two or three variants that change one feature, such as the number of beam pairs or the arch height.
  4. Load-test each variant twice by adding washers or pennies in a cup at the center until collapse. Record maximum load, bridge mass, and build time.
  5. Score every variant in a weighted decision matrix against each criterion and constraint, including load per gram of material.
  6. Improve the top-scoring design and retest it.

Standards mapped

  • NGSS · MS-ETS1-1

Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.

  • NGSS · MS-ETS1-2

Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
