Climate Adaptation Consultancy

Grades 6-860-75 minSource: Creative Dad Company

Students act as consultants who help a town get ready for changes in climate. They use real public climate and map data about their own town to suggest real local fixes, like more shade or flood-smart landscaping. It brings a huge world topic down to a place you can walk to.

Quick Start

Digital downloads only.

$0 to buy. Printing noted separately.

Student time: one class period, one day.

Teacher prep / build-ahead: separate from student time.

Scale it

The default plan is one class period on a single day.

Scale back: Fit it into a shorter period, use fewer effects, or run a demo instead of a build.

Scale up: Add one extra effect, or spread the share-out across another day.

Full Experience

Required materials for the class.

About $31.98 (estimate, some items still being priced) per class (class of about 30, 6 groups). Exceeds $25 per class.

Classroom cardboard or boxes can lower the cost.

Total Transformation

The bigger kit, with every optional item included.

About $31.98 (estimate, some items still being priced) per class (class of about 30, 6 groups).

Student time: one day (one session, one-day event).

Teacher prep / build-ahead: separate from student time.

Scale it

The default plan is one session, a one-day event.

Scale back: Shorten the event, or run a demo for a smaller audience.

Scale up: Spread the build and the event across days, or invite a bigger audience.

Steps

  1. Find real public data on local extreme heat days, heavy rain or flooding over at least 20 years (NOAA or local news). Predict which hazard matters most for the town.
  2. Graph the data, draw a trend line, and forecast how many extreme events per year the town may see in 10 and 20 years. Write the forecast with evidence.
  3. Map one at-risk area, like a low street or a playground with no shade.
  4. Use the forecast to set criteria (for example cool the playground surface by at least 5 degrees C, or hold 50 liters of rain per square meter) and constraints (a set budget, available space, and upkeep a volunteer crew can manage).
  5. Design at least two fixes (for example shade sails versus trees, or a rain garden versus permeable pavement). Test a small model of each fix, such as surface temperature under shade versus sun with a thermometer, or how fast water soaks through gravel versus pavement, and record the data.
  6. Score the fixes in a decision matrix against every criterion and constraint, using your test data.
  7. Present the plan to a mock town council, showing the hazard data, forecast and matrix behind each recommendation.

Analyze and interpret data on natural hazards to forecast future catastrophic events and inform the development of technologies to mitigate their effects.

Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
