Weather Balloon Mission

Grades 3-560-75 minSource: Creative Dad Company

Kids design a lightweight payload capsule that protects a fragile instrument while staying under a strict weight limit for a simulated high-altitude balloon launch. It's a satisfying constraint-based challenge that rewards clever, minimal design.

Student time: one class period, one day.

Teacher prep / build-ahead: separate from student time.

Scale it

The default plan is one class period on a single day.

Scale back: Fit it into a shorter period, use fewer effects, or run a demo instead of a build.

Scale up: Add one extra effect, or spread the share-out across another day.

Setup

Place common or recycled supplies for Weather Balloon Mission on one work surface and choose a safe area for the test. Read the four activity directions aloud; drawings, paper models, and household substitutes may replace specialized materials, and no digital tool is required.

Activity

  1. Review the weight limit and fragile-item challenge, then predict which lightweight materials will best protect the payload.
  2. Build the payload capsule, keeping careful track of weight on the scale as pieces are added.
  3. Test the payload with a simulated drop or launch, then redesign the capsule when it exceeds the weight limit or the fragile item breaks.
  4. Present the final payload design to mission control with its weight and test results.

Done when: The group produces the Weather Balloon Mission solution, completes the described test, makes the revision called for by the evidence, and supports its final explanation with an observed or measured result.
