Kids research an old-fashioned tool or machine, build a working model of it, then build a modern equivalent to compare how well each one performs the same job. It's history and engineering working side by side, with a fun compare-and-contrast finale.

Scale it

The default plan is one class period on a single day.

Setup

Place common or recycled supplies for Time Traveler's Tool Shop on one work surface and choose a safe area for the test. Read the four activity directions aloud; drawings, paper models, and household substitutes may replace specialized materials, and no digital tool is required.

Activity

  1. Research a historical tool or machine and predict how well it would perform its job compared to a modern version.
  2. Build a simple working model of the historical tool, then build or gather a modern equivalent for comparison.
  3. Test both tools doing the same task side by side, then redesign the historical model when it fails to demonstrate the technique it's supposed to represent.
  4. Present both tools to the class with a real performance comparison and an explanation of how the design evolved over time.
