Kids pick an invisible process, like evaporation, plant growth, or erosion, and animate it frame by frame with clay or paper cutouts to make the unseen visible. It turns science explanation into a genuine creative production kids are proud to screen for an audience.

Setup

Place common or recycled supplies for Stop-Motion Science Studio on one work surface and choose a safe area for the test. Read the four activity directions aloud; drawings, paper models, and household substitutes may replace specialized materials, and no digital tool is required.

Activity

  1. Choose an invisible science process and predict what it would look like sped up, then sketch it as a simple storyboard.
  2. Build the characters and scenes out of clay or paper and set up the camera stand for filming.
  3. Test-shoot a few frames and play them back, then redesign a scene or add more frames when the motion looks too jumpy or scientifically inaccurate.
  4. Screen the finished stop-motion film for the class and explain the real science behind each stage of the animation.
