Kids design a secret gadget, like a coded flashlight signal, a mirror periscope, or a simple lock mechanism, then put it through a real field test to prove it actually works. It's a covert-ops twist on engineering design that keeps testing and revising front and center.

Setup

Place common or recycled supplies for Spy Gadget Testing Bureau on one work surface and choose a safe area for the test. Read the four activity directions aloud; drawings, paper models, and household substitutes may replace specialized materials, and no digital tool is required.

Activity

  1. Choose a secret-message challenge, whether light, sound, or a hidden mechanism, and predict what design would solve it.
  2. Build the gadget, such as a periscope from mirrors and tubes or a light-flash code device using a flashlight and a code key.
  3. Test the gadget with a partner across the room, then redesign a part when the signal is missed or the mechanism jams.
  4. Run a live demonstration where each agent sends and correctly decodes a secret message using their gadget.
