Kids record sound levels at different spots around a location, then turn that acoustic data into a visual map showing where it's loudest and quietest. It's a fresh, ear-first way to practice data collection and mapping skills.

Setup

Place common or recycled supplies for Sound Map Expedition on one work surface and choose a safe area for the test. Read the four activity directions aloud; drawings, paper models, and household substitutes may replace specialized materials, and no digital tool is required.

Activity

  1. Look at the location map and predict which spots will be loudest and quietest before taking any measurements.
  2. Build a data-collection route and record sound level readings at each marked spot.
  3. Test the predictions against the real data, then revise the map's hot spots when a supposedly quiet area turns out loud or vice versa.
  4. Present the finished sound map to the group, explaining what causes the loudest and quietest spots.

Done when: The group produces the Sound Map Expedition solution, completes the described test, makes the revision called for by the evidence, and supports its final explanation with an observed or measured result.
