Grades 3-560-75 minSource: Creative Dad Company

Kids audit real energy use around the school, like lights left on, drafty windows, or running faucets, then propose a specific, measurable change and track whether it actually saves energy. It's a genuinely useful project with a real-world payoff the school can act on.

Setup

Place common or recycled supplies for School Energy Detectives on one work surface and choose a safe area for the test. Read the four activity directions aloud; drawings, paper models, and household substitutes may replace specialized materials, and no digital tool is required.

Activity

  1. Walk through a section of the school and predict which areas are likely wasting the most energy before checking anything.
  2. Build an audit checklist and survey the actual rooms, recording lights, drafts, and equipment left running.
  3. Test one proposed fix, like a lights-off reminder sign, then revise the plan when the change doesn't reduce energy use as expected.
  4. Present the energy audit findings and recommendations to school staff, backed by the before-and-after data.
