Kids build a coded signaling device, like a flashing light pattern or a sound-based code, that a rescue team across the room has to detect and correctly decode. It makes communication engineering feel like a real emergency mission.

Student time: one class period, one day.

Teacher prep / build-ahead: separate from student time.

Scale it

The default plan is one class period on a single day.

Scale back: Fit it into a shorter period, use fewer effects, or run a demo instead of a build.

Scale up: Add one extra effect, or spread the share-out across another day.

Setup

Place common or recycled supplies for Rescue Beacon Engineers on one work surface and choose a safe area for the test. Read the four activity directions aloud; drawings, paper models, and household substitutes may replace specialized materials, and no digital tool is required.

Activity

  1. Design a simple code using light flashes or sounds and predict whether a partner across the room could correctly detect and decode it.
  2. Build the signaling beacon and write out the code key for the rescue team to use.
  3. Test the beacon by sending a real message, then redesign the code or device when the rescue team misreads or misses the signal.
  4. Run a final rescue drill where the beacon successfully sends and the team correctly decodes an emergency message.

Done when: The group produces the Rescue Beacon Engineers solution, completes the described test, makes the revision called for by the evidence, and supports its final explanation with an observed or measured result.
