Kids use simple inheritance rules, like which traits are dominant, to predict what offspring of two invented mythical creatures would look like, then breed a few generations to test their predictions. It's genetics made playful and visual.

Setup

Place common or recycled supplies for Mythical Creature Genetics Lab on one work surface and choose a safe area for the test. Read the four activity directions aloud; drawings, paper models, and household substitutes may replace specialized materials, and no digital tool is required.

Activity

  1. Review the trait rules for two parent creatures and predict what combination of traits their offspring would likely show.
  2. Build the offspring's trait profile by drawing trait cards or rolling dice according to the inheritance rules, then draw the resulting creature.
  3. Test the prediction across a few more generations, then revise the trait chart when the results don't match the expected inheritance pattern.
  4. Present the family tree of creatures to the group, explaining which traits were dominant and why.

Done when: The group produces the Mythical Creature Genetics Lab solution, completes the described test, makes the revision called for by the evidence, and supports its final explanation with an observed or measured result.
