Grades 3-560-90 minSource: Creative Dad Company

Kids test how different materials react to water, light, and handling to figure out the safest way to protect a damaged pretend artifact, then write a conservation plan a real museum might use. It blends hands-on material science with the storytelling of protecting history.

Setup

Place common or recycled supplies for Museum Artifact Rescue on one work surface and choose a safe area for the test. Read the four activity directions aloud; drawings, paper models, and household substitutes may replace specialized materials, and no digital tool is required.

Activity

  1. Examine a set of ancient artifact replicas and predict which materials, such as water, sunlight, or rough handling, would damage each one the most.
  2. Build small protective housings using padding, wrapping, and labeled storage bins for each artifact based on its material.
  3. Test each artifact's housing by simulating a shipping jolt or a sunny display case, then redesign the packaging when an artifact cracks or fades anyway.
  4. Present a conservation report to the museum board explaining what damaged each artifact and how the new housing prevents it.

Done when: The group produces the Museum Artifact Rescue solution, completes the described test, makes the revision called for by the evidence, and supports its final explanation with an observed or measured result.
