Kids build a tiny movie set and use forced perspective and scale tricks to make a small object look giant on camera. It's a hands-on lesson in how filmmakers use physics and geometry to create illusions, with a real video to show for it.

Setup

Place common or recycled supplies for Miniature Movie Effects Studio on one work surface and choose a safe area for the test. Read the four activity directions aloud; drawings, paper models, and household substitutes may replace specialized materials, and no digital tool is required.

Activity

  1. Look at examples of forced-perspective photos and predict how camera distance and object placement create the illusion of size.
  2. Build a small set and position the camera and props to attempt the size illusion.
  3. Test the shot by reviewing the footage, then redesign the camera angle or prop placement when the illusion doesn't look convincing.
  4. Screen the final illusion video for the class and reveal the real setup behind the trick.
