Kids measure footprints, shadows, and other evidence left at a staged scene, then use math and reasoning to reconstruct exactly what happened. It's a detective-style project that makes measurement and inference feel like real investigative work.

Setup

Place common or recycled supplies for Forensic Art Laboratory on one work surface and choose a safe area for the test. Read the four activity directions aloud; drawings, paper models, and household substitutes may replace specialized materials, and no digital tool is required.

Activity

  1. Examine the staged evidence scene and predict what sequence of events could explain the footprints and objects left behind.
  2. Build a measured diagram of the scene, recording exact distances and positions of each piece of evidence.
  3. Test the working theory against a new piece of evidence, then revise the reconstructed story when it doesn't fit the measurements.
  4. Present the final case reconstruction to the group, backing up each claim with specific measured evidence.

Done when: The group produces the Forensic Art Laboratory solution, completes the described test, makes the revision called for by the evidence, and supports its final explanation with an observed or measured result.
