Grades 3-560-75 minSource: Creative Dad Company

Kids build a model town on a slanted tray, pour on rainfall, and watch where the water pools and floods before redesigning the drainage system to protect the buildings. It turns watershed science into a hands-on rescue mission with a satisfying before-and-after payoff.

Setup

Place common or recycled supplies for Flooded Town Command Center on one work surface and choose a safe area for the test. Read the four activity directions aloud; drawings, paper models, and household substitutes may replace specialized materials, and no digital tool is required.

Activity

  1. Build a clay landscape with hills and a town, then predict where rain poured from a cup will flow and pool.
  2. Construct the town's buildings and roads on the landscape, then add a first attempt at drainage channels.
  3. Test the design by pouring water evenly over the town, then redesign the channels or add barriers when a neighborhood floods anyway.
  4. Present the before-and-after flood maps to the town council and explain which drainage changes kept the most buildings dry.
