Emergency Bridge Consultancy

Grades 3-575-90 minSource: Creative Dad Company

Kids design a bridge for a specific client need, like carrying heavy trucks or spanning a wide flooded river, and then the constraints suddenly change mid-project, forcing a real redesign. It's engineering design with the same messy trade-offs real engineers face.

Scale it

The default plan is one class period on a single day.

Scale back: Fit it into a shorter period, use fewer effects, or run a demo instead of a build.

Scale up: Add one extra effect, or spread the share-out across another day.

Setup

Place common or recycled supplies for Emergency Bridge Consultancy on one work surface and choose a safe area for the test. Read the four activity directions aloud; drawings, paper models, and household substitutes may replace specialized materials, and no digital tool is required.

Activity

  1. Read the client's bridge requirements and predict what shape and materials will meet the load and span needed.
  2. Build the bridge to match the original client brief and constraints.
  3. Test the bridge with the load weights, then redesign it on the spot when the client brief suddenly changes, such as a wider river or a heavier load, and the original bridge doesn't meet it.
  4. Present the final revised bridge to the client, explaining what changed and why the new design still works.

Done when: The group produces the Emergency Bridge Consultancy solution, completes the described test, makes the revision called for by the evidence, and supports its final explanation with an observed or measured result.
