Grades 3-560-90 minSource: Creative Dad Company

Kids build a small submersible that can sink, rise, and retrieve a sample from the bottom of a water tank by controlling its buoyancy. It's a wet, hands-on physics challenge that makes floating and sinking endlessly satisfying to test.

Student time: one class period, one day.

Teacher prep / build-ahead: separate from student time.

Scale it

The default plan is one class period on a single day.

Scale back: Fit it into a shorter period, use fewer effects, or run a demo instead of a build.

Scale up: Add one extra effect, or spread the share-out across another day.

Setup

Place common or recycled supplies for Deep-Sea Submersible Test Tank on one work surface and choose a safe area for the test. Read the four activity directions aloud; drawings, paper models, and household substitutes may replace specialized materials, and no digital tool is required.

Activity

  1. Test a plain sealed bottle in water and predict what changes would make it sink, float, or hover in the middle.
  2. Build the submersible with adjustable weight and an air chamber, then attach a simple claw or hook for retrieving a sample.
  3. Test the submersible's dive and retrieval, then redesign the weight or air balance when it sinks too fast, won't come back up, or can't grab the sample.
  4. Demonstrate a full dive-and-retrieve mission for the group, reporting what buoyancy adjustments made it work.

Done when: The group produces the Deep-Sea Submersible Test Tank solution, completes the described test, makes the revision called for by the evidence, and supports its final explanation with an observed or measured result.

Materials

plastic bottles, clay or small weights, balloons or air tubing, a large clear bin filled with water, small toy objects as samples, tape
