Kids melt, cool, and mold chocolate to explore how temperature changes its strength and shape, then engineer a structure, like a small edible bridge, that has to hold real weight. It's a deliciously motivating way to explore materials science.

Student time: one class period, one day.

Teacher prep / build-ahead: separate from student time.

Scale it

The default plan is one class period on a single day.

Scale back: Fit it into a shorter period, use fewer effects, or run a demo instead of a build.

Scale up: Add one extra effect, or spread the share-out across another day.

Setup

Place common or recycled supplies for Chocolate Structure Lab on one work surface and choose a safe area for the test. Read the four activity directions aloud; drawings, paper models, and household substitutes may replace specialized materials, and no digital tool is required.

Activity

  1. Observe melted and solid chocolate side by side and predict how cooling time and shape will affect its strength.
  2. Build a small chocolate structure, like a bridge or beam, using molds and letting it cool completely.
  3. Test the structure's strength by slowly adding small weights, then redesign the shape or thickness when it cracks or sags too soon.
  4. Present the final structure and its weight-holding results, explaining how temperature and shape changed its strength.

Done when: The group produces the Chocolate Structure Lab solution, completes the described test, makes the revision called for by the evidence, and supports its final explanation with an observed or measured result.

Materials
