Kids research a specific need, like a peer who uses one hand or a child who is visually impaired, then redesign a familiar toy so that person can play with it too. It's an empathy-driven engineering project with a genuinely meaningful goal.

Setup

Place common or recycled supplies for Accessible Toy Design Agency on one work surface and choose a safe area for the test. Read the four activity directions aloud; drawings, paper models, and household substitutes may replace specialized materials, and no digital tool is required.

Activity

  1. Learn about a specific access need and predict what part of a familiar toy would be hardest for that person to use.
  2. Build a redesigned version of the toy that addresses the specific need, such as adding a bigger grip or textured markers.
  3. Test the redesigned toy by simulating the constraint, like using only one hand, then revise the design when it's still too difficult to use.
  4. Present the redesigned toy to the group, explaining exactly how each change makes play more accessible.

Done when: The group produces the Accessible Toy Design Agency solution, completes the described test, makes the revision called for by the evidence, and supports its final explanation with an observed or measured result.
