Tell the council, fairly and clearly, what the public said about the Elm Street Park plan, and give them realistic options.

Client scenario

Welcome to the Public Comment Analysis Office. The City of Riverton Parks & Recreation Department (fictional) has proposed a redesign of Elm Street Park, and 60 people have sent comments. Before the City Council decides, the Director needs a fair summary of what the public said and a set of options to present at a public meeting.

Client: The Parks Director (the teacher in role), who reports to the City Council.

The council needs to know what residents want, where they disagree, and what the realistic choices are, without spin.

Roles

  • Lead Analyst
  • Comment Coders
  • Stakeholder Analyst
  • Options Writer
  • Presenter
  • Quality Lead

The twist: The Director's Late Comments Memo (H3): 20 comments have arrived from residents of the Elm Court Apartments, who were left out of the first outreach (the notice was online and in English only, and flyers went to houses). And the council has moved the meeting up two days, to Session 9.

Standards mapped

Mapped means the framework is verified and the teacher confirms the evidence. It isn't a claim that a project meets a standard.

Safety, devices and privacy

  • All comments are fictional. Students analyze the printed comment set only. They never collect, read or post real public comments, and never contact real officials.
  • The mock public meeting happens in the classroom. It isn't filmed, recorded or streamed. Students playing "residents" use the question cards (H8), not their own opinions about real neighbors.
  • Neutral, respectful language. Comments are summarized fairly; nobody's comment is mocked, and no real group is described with stereotypes.
  • School devices only. No phones, and no personal accounts. Slides and spreadsheets are made in an offline tool or a school-managed account.
  • No photos of students. No student names or personal information on any deliverable. Sign work "Team [#]".
  • Low-cost, school-realistic materials only. Follow the school's usual classroom rules.
